Military Officials Against War with Iran
Top military officials have warned that war with Iran would be devastating and should only be considered as a last option.
- The results of an American or Israeli military strike on Iran could, in my view, prove catastrophic, haunting us for generations in that part of the world.Robert Gates, Former Secretary of Defense (2006-2011), October 3, 2012
- An attack would make a nuclear-armed Iran inevitable. They would just bury the program deeper and make it more covert.Robert Gates, Former Secretary of State (2006-2011), October 3, 2012
- “I do not underestimate the Israeli talent, but geometry and physics tell us that Iran’s nuclear program would pose a difficult challenge to any military, as it is not a raid, and Israel’s resources are more limited than those of the U.S.
There is no absolute certainty that all targets are known. They will have to be revisited - which only the U.S. Air Force would be able to do - and the operation will only set the Iranians back some time and actually push them to do that which it is supposed to prevent, getting nuclear weapons.”Gen. Michael Hayden, Former CIA Director (2006-2009), September 4, 2012 - An Israeli bombing would lead to a regional war and solve the internal problems of the Islamic Republic of Iran. It would galvanize Iranian society behind the leadership and create unity around the nuclear issue. And it would justify Iran in rebuilding its nuclear project and saying, ‘Look, see, we were attacked by the Zionist enemy and we clearly need to have it.’Meir Dagan, Former Director of Mossad (2002 – 2010), September 3, 2012
- We must not hem the Iranians in and we must not push them into a corner. We have to try to give them an honorable way out.Ephraim Halevy, Former Director of Mossad, September 1, 2012
- Going to war is an absolute and irreversible act that entails high costs. Accordingly, before using force, we need to exhaust all the other possibilities…Some of them have not even been tried.Ephraim Halevy, Former Director of Mossad, September 1, 2012
- We have to take into account the possibility that if we attack Iran’s nuclear facilities, there will no longer be a political horizon in regard to Iran or sanctions against Iran.Ephraim Halevy, Former Director of Mossad, September 1, 2012
- We need to understand that after the attack, a deep Israeli complex will develop in Iran, one that crosses parties and opinions and communities, because we will become the symbol of those that humiliated Iran and prevented it from restoring its greatness.Ephraim Halevy, Former Director of Mossad, September 1, 2012
